Trip to Saint Lucia

The romantic Caribbean

Saint Lucia, the island of two peaks

An independent Commonwealth state since 1979, Saint Lucia is the most spectacularly volcanic island in the Lesser Antilles: its two peaks rise vertically out of the turquoise, and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The honeymoon capital of the world, with twenty-seven titles at the World Travel Awards, it is home to Jade Mountain Resort, one of the most distinguished addresses in the Caribbean.

The UNESCO Pitons and the world's only drive-in volcano

Gros Piton and Petit Piton rise out of the turquoise on the south-west coast at Soufrière. Gros Piton can be hiked with a guide in 4 to 5 hours round trip. Five minutes away is Soufrière itself: the world's only drive-in caldera, where you cross the fumaroles before plunging into the hot volcanic mud baths.

Jade Mountain and the honeymoon capital of the world

Saint Lucia is the world's most awarded honeymoon destination. Jade Mountain Resort is its standard-bearer: sanctuaries without a fourth wall, a private pool in every room, food by a renowned chef. Sugar Beach Viceroy (between the two peaks), Anse Chastanet, Ladera, Cap Maison (Relais & Châteaux) and BodyHoliday complete the hotel scene.

A volcanic, Creole and literary island

Independent from the English-speaking Commonwealth, Saint Lucia has changed hands fourteen times between France and England, hence its nickname Helen of the West Indies. The toponymy is French, the Creole Kwéyòl spoken on a daily basis. Two Nobel Prize winners were born in Castries: Sir Arthur Lewis in economics and Derek Walcott in literature.

The two islands are volcanic neighbors, but their identities are distinct. Saint Lucia is an English-speaking, independent Commonwealth country, marked by the UNESCO Pitons and a world-class honeymoon scene facing the two pitons. Martinique is French (euro, French art de vivre, AOC rum unique in the world), with Montagne Pelée classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023 and the only Relais & Châteaux in the French West Indies. The two can be combined on a single trip via the L'Express des Îles ferry (1h30).

The consistent minimum is 5 nights for a first discovery (Pitons, volcano, two beaches, a day at sea). The optimal format for tailor-made agencies is 7 to 10 nights, which adds the wild east coast (Bathsheba, Atlantic), Marigot Bay, Rabot Plantation and Pigeon Island. For a combination with Martinique, Barbados or Grenada, allow 10 to 14 nights in total.
